Tips for your Furnace in Extreme Cold

While the wintertime brings immense joy and holiday wonder, it also brings extremely cold temperatures to certain parts of the country. If you live in an area prone to extreme cold, then you can expect your furnace to have to work harder than ever this time of year. Don’t worry, the tips below will help ensure your furnace runs optimally.

Check/Replace Your Furnace Filters:

You should regularly check and replace your furnace filter every 1-2 months, however; it is especially important to check your furnace filter during extreme cold. If your filter full of dust, pet dander, and other particles, this will cause your HVAC to work harder because of decreased air flow. Changing your filter will help to increase airflow through your system, in turn allowing warm air to better circulate on cold days.

Check/Lower Your Thermostat:
Did you know that reducing your heater temperature during the winter can minimize overuse?  Lowering your thermostat a few degrees (ex: from a 72 to 68) during extreme cold will allow your furnace much needed reprieve from working so hard to heat your home. Try this effective practice to limit the strain on your HVAC during bouts of extreme cold.

Note that depending on how cold it is outside, you may not be able to turn up your thermostat as high as you want.  This is because furnaces are rated to perform with a certain efficiency and can’t always keep up with the heat loss inside the home when exterior temperatures are extremely cold. Should you experience this issue, you can try using a space heater for more localized comfort.
